A picture can speak a thousand words and there are plenty of fond memories that are attached to family photos. Watching your little one grow, your family pet, pictures of those who have passed on, all hold a special place in our hearts.
You want to preserve your memories to last a lifetime and to do that, you need to store your family photos in the right way.
Here’s how:
- Store them safely:
As humidity and temperature can degrade photographs, you need to store the images in the right location. The most important factor to consider is ensuring they are safe from rodent or insect damage, and excess water.
Keep your photos in locations where they are free from dampness, leaks and even the rare but possible event of flooding. Also, keep them in places where they are not directly exposed to light.
- Handle the negatives properly:
Negatives need to be handled with dry, clean hands. Make sure that you always hold the negatives by the edge, and never place your fingers directly onto them.
This is because fingertips can contain oil and other chemicals which could permanently damage the photographs forever.
- Digitize your photos:
A lot of us have physical copies of photos that may have been stored away for many years. These copies don’t have duplicates and many of them are irreplaceable. Instead, you can take them to a photo center and have them digitized.
The digitization process won’t take more than a few days, and you can always print out a physical copy whenever needed.
With these techniques, you can ensure the long-term safety and preservation of your precious photos.
